A Sussex Carol elõször 1684-ben jelent meg nyomtatásban, a Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (Jámbor, istenes  dallamok kis fûzére) címû gyûjteményben. A ma énekelt változatot 1919-ben  Vaughan Williams és Cecil Sharp gyûjtötte  Sussexben, innen a címe.

Karácsonyi dalokat már a 13- 14. századi Angliában is énekeltek. Ezek a dalok szorosan összekapcsolódtak a tánccal és a szövegük sem volt olyan ünnepélyes mint a himnuszoké. Nagy népszerûségnek örvendtek egészen a 17. század közepéig, amikor is a Puritán Parlament a karácsonnyal együtt betiltotta a dalokat is. A 'christmas carol' reneszánsza a 19. század elejéhez, a viktoriánus Angliához köthetõ, amikor a születõ új énekek mellett a régiek is újból megjelenhettek a különbözõ gyûjteményekben.
